Improving Beer Filtration Stability with PP Prefilters and PES Membrane Cartridges

Customer Background

The customer operates a brewery producing packaged beer for retail distribution.

Before filling, the beer passes through cartridge filtration to improve clarity and control microorganisms. The existing system used membrane cartridges as the final filtration stage.

However, the customer was experiencing a recurring problem: the final membrane cartridges were loading too quickly, causing differential pressure to rise faster than expected and increasing replacement frequency.

Because membrane cartridges are one of the higher-cost consumables in the filtration system, frequent replacement was increasing both operating cost and maintenance workload.

The Challenge

The final membrane filter was receiving too much residual yeast, fine suspended solids and colloidal contamination from the upstream process.

Although the membrane could achieve the required final filtration performance, it was being forced to handle a contaminant load that should have been removed earlier.

Problem Impact
Rapid differential pressure increase Shorter membrane life
Excessive solids reaching final filter Faster membrane fouling
Frequent cartridge replacement Higher labor and downtime
High membrane consumption Increased filtration cost

The customer needed to extend membrane service life without reducing beer quality or making major modifications to the existing filtration system.

Pullner Filtration Solution

Pullner reviewed the existing filtration process rather than simply replacing the membrane with another cartridge of the same rating.

The main objective was to redistribute the filtration load so that coarse and fine contaminants were removed before the beer reached the final membrane.

The optimized system used a two-stage configuration:

PP Prefiltration → PES Final Membrane Filtration

This arrangement allowed the PP cartridge to handle the majority of the particulate load, while the PES membrane focused on final fine filtration and microbial control.

1. Evaluating the Existing Filtration Conditions

Before selecting the cartridges, the main operating conditions were reviewed, including:

  • beer flow rate

  • existing filter housing dimensions

  • cartridge length and connection type

  • initial and terminal differential pressure

  • temperature during filtration

  • cleaning and sanitization method

  • expected filtration volume per production cycle

  • solids loading entering the final filtration stage

This information was used to determine whether the short membrane life was caused by the membrane itself or by excessive upstream contamination.

The evaluation indicated that the main problem was insufficient protection of the final membrane.

2. Adding a High-Capacity PP Prefiltration Stage

A PP cartridge was installed upstream of the PES membrane.

The purpose of this stage was to capture residual yeast, suspended particles and other contamination before they reached the final membrane.

Rather than selecting an unnecessarily fine PP cartridge, the prefilter rating was chosen to balance three factors:

particle removal, flow capacity and service life.

If the prefilter is too coarse, excessive contamination passes downstream.

If it is too fine, the PP cartridge itself can block too quickly and create additional pressure loss.

The final prefilter specification therefore depends on actual beer quality and upstream clarification performance.

For brewery applications, PP depth or pleated cartridges can be selected according to contaminant loading and required throughput.

The prefilter provides several benefits:

  • higher dirt-holding capacity

  • lower cost than using the final membrane for particle removal

  • reduced particulate loading on the PES membrane

  • slower increase in downstream differential pressure

  • easier and more economical cartridge replacement

3. Using PES Membrane Only for Final Filtration

After most of the particulate contamination had been removed, the beer passed through the PES membrane cartridge.

PES was selected because its hydrophilic membrane structure is suitable for critical liquid filtration and provides controlled pore characteristics for final beer filtration.

Depending on the brewery's microbial control requirements, membrane ratings such as 0.45 μm or 0.65 μm may be considered.

However, the final selection should be based on the required microbial retention performance rather than pore size alone.

By reducing the particle load reaching the PES membrane, the cartridge could operate closer to its intended function instead of acting as both a clarification filter and a final membrane.

4. Controlling Differential Pressure Across Both Stages

Differential pressure was treated as an important operating indicator.

Instead of waiting until the final membrane blocked rapidly, the customer could monitor pressure development across the PP and PES stages separately.

This made it easier to determine where contamination was accumulating.

For example:

Pressure Behavior Possible Cause
PP differential pressure rises quickly High upstream solids loading
PES pressure rises quickly while PP remains stable Prefilter rating may be too coarse
Both stages rise rapidly High overall contaminant load or insufficient filtration area
Pressure remains stable Filtration stages are operating as intended

This approach also helps maintenance teams avoid replacing the more expensive membrane simply because the total system pressure has increased.

5. Matching the Cartridges to Existing Equipment

The solution was designed around the customer's existing filter housings.

Cartridge length, end connection, sealing configuration and gasket material were matched to the installed equipment so that no major housing or piping changes were required.

Where beer-contact applications require repeated cleaning or sanitization, cartridge materials and seals must also be compatible with the customer's cleaning chemicals and operating temperature.

This is particularly important for membrane cartridges, because long-term service life depends not only on filtration performance but also on how the cartridge responds to repeated sanitization cycles.

6. Verifying the New Filtration Arrangement

The optimized system was evaluated by monitoring:

  • initial differential pressure

  • pressure increase during operation

  • filtration flow rate

  • beer clarity

  • cartridge service cycle

  • final filtration performance

  • cartridge condition after use

The objective was not simply to confirm that the filters could be installed.

The customer needed to verify that the PP prefilter effectively reduced the contamination reaching the PES membrane and that the final membrane could maintain stable performance over a longer operating period.

Results

After optimizing the filtration stages, the customer achieved a more stable filtration process.

The PP cartridge absorbed most of the upstream particulate load, allowing the PES membrane to operate under more suitable conditions.

The main improvements included:

  • more stable differential pressure

  • reduced loading on the final membrane

  • longer membrane operating cycles

  • fewer unnecessary membrane replacements

  • more predictable filtration performance

  • reduced overall cartridge consumption

Most importantly, the improvement was achieved without requiring a major redesign of the existing production line.

Why Two-Stage Filtration Works Better

Using the finest membrane cartridge for every filtration task is rarely the most economical approach.

In beer filtration, contaminants should be removed progressively.

The prefilter handles the higher particle load, while the final membrane performs the more critical fine filtration task.

This protects the more expensive membrane and makes better use of the filtration capacity of both cartridges.

For breweries experiencing rapid membrane blockage or frequent cartridge replacement, the solution is often not to use a different membrane alone.

The more effective approach is to review the complete filtration sequence.

Pullner provides PP prefilters, PES membrane cartridges, PTFE sterile gas filters and stainless steel utility filters for brewery filtration systems.

Filter configurations can be selected according to beer characteristics, flow rate, filtration requirements, sanitation method and existing filter housing design.
